Tired of the same Minecraft worlds? Want to explore epic creations made by other players, challenge yourself with adventure maps, or simply try something new? Importing custom maps into Minecraft is a great way to expand your gameplay experience. This guide will show you how to do it step by step, ensuring you can enjoy countless hours of fun with new worlds.
Before you begin, make sure you have the following:
Minecraft installed: Obviously, you need the game.
A downloaded map: Maps usually come in .zip or .rar format. You can find them on popular websites such as Planet Minecraft, CurseForge, or Minecraft Maps.
Step by Step: Importing Maps in Minecraft (Java Edition)
Most custom maps are designed for Minecraft Java Edition, which is the original PC version.
- Download the Map
Find the map you want to import and download it. Make sure the map version is compatible with the Minecraft version you are using (although many modern maps work across multiple versions). - Extract the Map File
Once downloaded, the map will be in a compressed file. Right-click on it and select “Extract Here” or “Extract Files” to unzip it. You will see a folder with the map’s name (for example, “MyAmazingMap” or “TheLostTemple”). - Locate the Minecraft Saves Folder
Next, you need to find the folder where Minecraft stores your worlds. The location varies depending on your operating system:
Press Windows + R to open the Run window.
Type %appdata%.minecraft\saves and press Enter.
Open Finder.
Click “Go” in the top menu bar, then hold the Option (Alt) key and select “Library”.Navigate to Application Support/minecraft/saves.
Navigate to ~/.minecraft/saves.
- Move the Map Folder to the “saves” Folder
Copy the extracted map folder (the one containing files like level.dat, region, etc.) and paste it into the saves folder you located in the previous step. - Launch Minecraft and Play
Open the Minecraft Launcher and select the appropriate game version (if the map was designed for a specific version). Once in the game:
Scroll through the list of worlds. You should see the name of the map you just imported.
Select it and click “Play Selected World”.
That’s it! You are now exploring your new map.
Importing Maps in Minecraft Bedrock Edition (Windows 10/11, Consoles, Mobile)
Minecraft Bedrock Edition (formerly known as Pocket Edition) uses a slightly different process due to its file structure.
- Download the Map
Maps for Bedrock Edition usually come with .mcworld or .mcpack file extensions. You can find them on the same community websites. - Direct Installation (.mcworld)
If the file is a .mcworld, in most cases you can simply double-click it. Minecraft Bedrock will automatically open and import the world. You will receive an in-game message confirming the import. - Manual Extraction (for compressed files or .mcpack)
If the map comes as a .zip, .rar, or a .mcpack that does not import automatically, you will need to:
Locate the Bedrock worlds folder:
Windows 10/11:
C:\Users\YOUR_USER\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds
Games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds (use a file manager to access these folders).
Launch Minecraft Bedrock: The new world should now appear in your worlds list.
